Course information
This course will provide you with a comprehensive set of architectural bench joinery skills, preparing you for progression into employment or further training within the construction industry. You will develop both practical ability and technical understanding, learning how to produce high-quality timber components used in building and interior construction.
Throughout the course, you will cover key areas including:
• The Construction Industry – gaining an understanding of how the industry is structured, the different roles within it, and how bench joinery fits into wider construction projects
• Health and Safety in Construction – learning how to work safely in a workshop environment and on site, including risk assessments, safe systems of work and correct use of PPE
• Basic Tool Skills, Preparation and Maintenance – developing confidence in using hand tools and measuring equipment, as well as learning how to maintain them in good working condition
• Joinery Operations – producing a range of timber components and joints, developing accuracy, quality control and an understanding of industry standards
• Cutting and Shaping Machinery – learning how to safely set up, operate and maintain a range of woodworking machinery used in bench joinery, including cutting and shaping equipment
• Material Preparation and Selection – understanding different types of timber and materials, and how to prepare them correctly for use in joinery projects

You will spend most of your time learning in our well-equipped, industry-standard workshops, where you will practise these skills in a safe and supportive environment. As your confidence and ability grow, you will take on more complex and detailed joinery projects that reflect real industry work.
In addition, you will have the opportunity to take part in national skills competitions such as KFE4Skills and contribute to community projects around Folkestone.
