EKC Folkestone College make a difference at The Beacon School

20 March 2026
Discover how our students have made a difference this Community Week at The Beacon School.

Community Week brings together students and staff from across the College to engage in social action projects which give back to the local community.

This week serves as a valuable opportunity for students to apply the skills they’ve learnt and are continuing to develop, whilst completing a project to help others.

A key part of our efforts this year has been dedicated to helping the pupils at The Beacon School.

Explore this week’s activities to see how our students have made a difference in today’s blog.

Early Years students created learning resources as part of their Community Week efforts.

They made a range of practical tools to support communication and language, including laminated flip storybooks so they don’t tear easily, emotion cards to help pupils express their feelings, and PEC cards to support everyday communication.

Students then visited the school to hand out the resources in person and were given a tour of the facilities. It was a valuable experience that gave them insight into specialist education, while making a real difference to the school community.

T Level Education and Early Years student Grace said on the day:

“We’ve created a range of resources including emotion cards, storybooks that we’ve laminated so they don’t tear easily, and themed cards like pets and different stories. These are for the children at the Beacon, and we hope they’ll support their cognitive development and help with communication.

“I think doing projects like this is really beneficial because it gives us more experience in the local area, helps us learn about different areas of development, and gives us an insight into how things work at the Beacon. It’s also helped us learn more about SEN.”

Our Level 2 Sports Coaching students also visited The Beacon School to deliver three days of PE lessons. Games in the outdoor sport facilities included football and basketball, presented to a wide range of age groups and abilities.

The students were practical with their demonstrations and gave some key skills and advice, alongside mentoring some pupils at a similar age.

Level 2 student, Bradley, said:

“It’s very beneficial for us having this experience as part of our course. It gives us a chance to teach knowledge and practice our coaching to others, especially as we normally focus on different sports like combat, gymnastics and powerlifting. It’s just nice to give back and teach.”

Our Sports Lecturer, Sophie Robinson, said about this opportunity:

“We partnered up with The Beacon to spend some time out in the community. At the moment, we’re developing our learners’ coaching abilities, so this is perfect timing for them to be in a different environment where they might need to adapt their coaching methods more.

“It is always difficult when you’re coaching different age groups and abilities, but these sessions are giving them another chance to practice and add it to their work experience.”

Deputy Assistant Headteacher at The Beacon, Nathan Moore, was pleased with the engagement between their pupils and our learners, saying:

“It’s been great for the Sports students to talk about their experience at College, as well as coaching sport. These sessions are holistic as well as practical which has benefited our pupils so much.”

Thank you to The Beacon School for hosting us, and we can’t wait to visit again in the near future.

It has been fantastic to see all the projects staff and students have done throughout this Community Week, with our learners and staff working hard to give back.
