EKC Folkestone College hosted its first immersive construction workshop featuring guest speaker BPC, who delivered an informative talk and practical sessions to our students in person and virtually to EKC Canterbury College students.
The Plastering and Bricklaying students began in the immersive classroom with a talk from Leanne and David who delivered a presentation on the materials supplied by BPC, which is a product engineering company.
EKC Canterbury College Bricklaying students viewed the talk via a Teams call, using our high-tech immersive equipment.
Tina McMillan, Programme Director for Bricklaying and Plastering at EKC Folkestone College, said: “Sometimes with companies, it’s quite difficult to try and cater to all of our campuses. That’s why we’ve organised this. We organised for the students here to learn, but then students from other campuses can hear the speaker as well.”
For the practical sessions, supplies were delivered to both campuses so all students could partake in the session.
Damien Torrance, Business Development Manager at Tool Station, also attended the event to support the sessions.
He said: “With the immersive classroom, we can target a bigger student group in one hit. There are time restraints, trying to get around to multiple campuses. I’ve never seen anything like this in my life.”
This was the first time Tina has organised a guest speaker that includes other campuses, but she has plans to go further.
“I’ve got quite a few connections with employers, so hopefully I want to expand what we are able to do here. We can also link in with other campuses when they have events going on,” she said.
