Ensuring your young person gets the best education and the right support to continue their progression is core to our Group’s approach.
In order to achieve that, we’ve designed a range of courses which ensure your young person develops the skills they need to progress seamlessly through our curriculum offering.
All Inclusive Learning students are supported to experience College life, whilst building confidence and developing communication, independence and life skills.
Students are able to experience College life whilst building confidence and gaining the skills and qualifications required for their progression.
This enables them to gain a better understanding of the expectations and options open to them.
Students are able to experience a wide range of our vocational areas in small groups, including Catering and Construction.
Did you know we are listed as a Makaton friendly College by the Makaton charity, which oversees the use of the language based on symbols and hand gestures?
This means that in College, we understand that different people use alternative ways to communicate.
We also use symbols and signs to aid inclusiveness and independence.
After we’ve reviewed their needs, we’re committed to providing an appropriate level of support for your young person.
We’ll draw information from their Education, Health and Care Plan, and other sources, to ensure the necessary support is put in place.
We use the RARPA (Recognising and Recording Progress and Achievement) structure for all of our life skills programmes, with a baseline assessment to evidence your young person’s development.
This is a personalised approach to learning to prepare your young person for adulthood.
Our independent living and learning flat allows learners to practise daily living tasks in a realistic setting.
This includes learning how to practice cleaning and improve their household skills.
There are also opportunities for students to carry out work placements with external organisations and at our College in a variety of roles.
This includes working in our Refectory and alongside teams such as College Services and Estates.
All placements help to develop communication, teamwork and employability skills.
The Inclusive Learning department is not open to the rest of the College and is only accessible to those who are studying in the area.
We have a sensory room where students can relax and refocus, and an art room that provides a creative space to express themself and explore their emotions.
We ensure students get to explore the local community regularly.
This allows them to learn about the area, different organisations, and exciting enrichment opportunities.
Previously, ‘Discovery’ students took a trip to the local fire station, where they had a guided tour, explored some of the equipment and even took part in some target practice with the hoses.
Our aim is to support students to learn the skills to manage personal challenges and to enable students to have greater independence in their learning and personal lives.
Learners in Inclusive Learning explore the theme of homelessness, but one learner took things a step further.
Katya Mills, LEAP student, was inspired to take action.
On her own initiative, she approached our Deputy Principal to ask if the College could support local people in need. She designed a poster, rallied staff and students, and led a donation drive for essential items.
Thanks to Katya’s efforts and compassion, the donations were handed over to Caroline Watton, Secretary and Co-ordinator for Action on Homelessness, Folkestone.
We’re incredibly proud of Katya for showing what kindness and leadership can achieve.
We offer a comprehensive range of Inclusive Learning Support (ILS) designed to ensure all students can thrive on their course.
Our ‘Discover’ students welcomed volunteers from Dover-based charity Emmaus.
To build on the session, students took part in a ‘Christmas Clear Out’, and donated clothes, games, and gifts they no longer use.
Our Inclusive Learning students impress judges every year at the KFE4Skills contest.
By taking part in the boccia competition, learners build teamwork skills and have the opportunity to win medals.
Carol is our Deputy Head of Inclusive Learning.
She has a range of experience in educational settings, particularly in SEND (Special Educational Needs and Disability).
Carol can be found in the Inclusive Learning department supporting the broad curriculum offer, working with the team and supporting the teaching of lessons.
Our Inclusive Learning courses are designed to give learners opportunities to develop confidence, independence, and skills for life and work.
Some students may progress to further learning, such as:
• Level 1 Employability skills
• Entry Level 3 Personal and Social Skills
• Progression to another learning facility
