Catching up with Level 3 Multimedia student Dylan at KFE4Skills

We caught up with Dylan, who previously studied at our Junior College and has also served as Students’ Union President. Now in his second year studying Level 3 Multimedia, Dylan recently competed in this year’s KFE4Skills competition.

During the busy KFE4Skills event at EKC Canterbury College, we managed to find a short gap in the day to speak with Dylan about the competition and how he’s getting on.

Can you tell us a little bit about the project that you’re working on today?

Today I’m taking part in an editing competition, where we’ve been given footage to edit to show our skills in continuity. The footage is made up of lots of random pieces that we have to try and make sense of during the edit.

What skills are you using today?

I’ve been thinking about my past projects over the last two years and how I edited those together, which has helped. You need patience too, it’s very much a trial-and-error situation. You also need a good eye to work out which scenes go well together, and what music complements the footage.

You took part in this competition last year. What made you want to do it again?

I think it’s a really good experience, to be honest. I really enjoy editing and will find any excuse to work on an editing project.

What has college taught you about the media industry so far?

College has given me a good insight into how the industry works and what employers are looking for. I’ve seen the difference between working with an industry company, an industry partner, and being freelance. I now understand the skills they’re looking for and what’s required for each of those paths.

College has also given me some great work experience within the industry, so I’ve been able to see how our partners operate and what their workload is like. I’ve also had the chance to work with people in the media and film industry, which has been really interesting. Shadowing them and seeing how they work has been a great experience.

Is there anything that has surprised you?

Communication has surprised me, how people communicate and how everyone’s communication styles are quite different. You’ve got to learn how people communicate in order to work with them effectively, which is an important skill. They’re all just very interesting people.

What do you want to do when you’ve finished college?

I’m planning to go to university in Farnham to study Film Production.
