Josh Coleman is completing the Advanced Carpentry and Joinery Level 3 Apprenticeship. We spoke with Josh to find out about his apprenticeship journey.
“I was 19 when I started labouring at Clifford Construction, and worked there for two years. I was adamant that I wanted to go to university because both my parents had got degrees, but I changed my mind and my boss decided to give me a Level 2 apprenticeship. It’s now four years later and I’ve never looked back.
The boss explained to me that I was getting really good at my job and he felt the time was right for me to get my Level 2. I did that for two years and Level 3 was only an extra year so I thought I might as well as I enjoyed the Level 2 so much.
I was originally at Canterbury College for the Level 2, before moving to Folkestone for Level 3. In terms of the course, it’s been fantastic. Really great. I’ve had to adjust to the different atmosphere here, what with different staff members, workshops and equipment, but I really like it here. I’ve got a great tutor in Mark – he always encourages me to push my limits and expand my knowledge. Folkestone’s got great facilities, especially in the joinery workshop, which are excellent in teaching you the skills you need in the workplace. It’s a smaller campus than Canterbury, which I actually think is quite a nice thing.”
