Louie Silcock is studying the HNC in Construction Management at EKC Folkestone College. Currently working for the family business, Silcock Builders, running for over 60 years, Louie joined the course to gain advanced knowledge so that he is ready to lead the business.
We spoke to him about his experiences both during Construction projects and on the course:

Why did you decide to study this course?
I chose to study the HNC in Construction Management as I would like to go into construction at a higher level than being on the tools.
I want to try and progress up the ranks in my career. I’m fortunate enough that I work for the family business, so my aim is to eventually take that on. Studying here means that when I finish, I’ll have the tools and skills to be able to do so.
What do you like most about the course?
What I think is useful in the course is that I can put the skills I learn into practice on the job. In the management side of things, especially, I feel like I can now direct and lead with more confidence knowing that my leadership is becoming more professional.
I also really like the group of people that I’m working with. Everyone gets on well and helps each other out if there are any problems or challenges. Our Lecturer, Shipra, runs the course really well and is always there to help when needed.
Tell us more about your background in Construction:
I work for Silcock Builders, a family business which has gone on for about 60 years. We mainly deal with insurance, house fires and floods. Prior to that, I’d done a three-year course in Horticulture and Landscaping, so I had more groundwork experience. I’ve always been in and around Construction and enjoyed it.
I joined the family business a year or two ago and immersed myself in what I do. I’m on the tools at the minute and taking on foreman and supervisor roles, but at a very low level, as I want to develop further which is what the course will help me to do.
Give us an example of how your studies are currently helping your career:
The business has just finished a project down in Dover, which was a big house fire. I’ve been working on the project from start to finish as we’ve had to strip it out and start rebuilding.
We’ve recently handed the property back over, and I was able to say with more confidence and professionalism what we’ve done, why we’ve done it and how we’ve done it. Thanks to the course overall, I’m able to convey what I’ve done more professionally.
What do you feel is a key benefit of studying this course?
I’d say simply having the Certificate to say that you’ve done the course is a big benefit and a reason why people should study, especially if they want to advance their career. Whilst experience and life knowledge is important, having qualifications shows to employers, employees and other companies that you’ve put the time and effort in better yourself and your skillset.
Is there anything you’ve been most proud of achieving during your studies?
I’m proud of the fact that I’ve been able to juggle my career with finishing assignments on time has been good. My work hasn’t been delayed and I’m able to balance the two which is very positive.
What advice would you give to someone considering this course?
I would say allocate the time to do the coursework correctly and properly. You should also make sure you follow the guidelines and questions so you’re clear of what is expected when it comes to projects. Help is there if needed, so take advantage of it.
I think due to where I aim to be at in the future, it was the best decision I’ve made to study here.
